Learn moreAcrylic Box Closure Options
Lidded acrylic boxes are available in six closure formats. The right choice depends on how often the box is opened, how tight a seal you need and how the closure should feel. Lift-off lids are the most economical; telescoping lids seal against dust; hinged lids stay attached so they cannot be lost; snap fits need no hardware at all; magnetic closures feel premium and are widely used for high-end gift packaging; lockable versions suit ballot boxes and document storage.
| How it works | Best for | |
|---|---|---|
| Lift-off | The lid rests on its own ledge or tab in the base — no hardware at all | Storage, low-cost gift and packaging boxes |
| Telescoping | The lid sleeves over the end panels, closing the gap and keeping dust out | Protective storage, display boxes |
| Hinged | The lid is fixed with a piano hinge or an integrated acrylic hinge | Countertop, retail and repeat-access boxes |
| Snap-fit | The lid clicks into a moulded corner for a secure hold, with no hardware | Small parts, gifts and caddy boxes |
| Magnetic | Recessed magnets create a clean, hardware-free closure | Gifts, cosmetics, jewellery, premium unboxing |
| Lockable | A key lock or padlock hasp secures the lid or rear door | Donations, ballots, secure storage |

|---|---|---|
| All clear | Every panel is transparent, so contents are visible from every angle. | Storage boxes, shoe boxes, display applications |
| Mixed panels | A combination of clear, frosted, coloured or mirrored panels — typically a coloured base or sides with a clear lid or front. | Gift boxes, flower boxes, brand packaging |
| Opaque + window | A solid-colour body with one or more clear panels for selective viewing. | Donation boxes (clear front, opaque sides), luxury packaging |
Internal Configuration
.webp)
Colour box — deep recess
An open five-sided box that sits on a table. A deep recess (3–5 cm) creates a display well for balls, medals, dried flowers and memorabilia.

Gift box — fitted tray
A magnetic lid with die-cut foam or a velvet insert shaped to the product. The interior is what makes the unboxing feel premium.

Storage box — dividers
A lift-off lid with a removable divider grid that drops into precisely cut channels. Compartments can be reconfigured as item sizes change.

Shoe box — front door
The front panel hinges at the top and drops down for access — no unpacking needed. A magnet at the bottom clicks it shut, and the interlock keeps stacks stable.
Not sure which structure you need? Send us your specification and we will recommend the most suitable opening, panel and interior combination.
Box Construction & Interior Design
A custom acrylic box — including the lidded boxes used for gift packaging, storage and retail — is defined by four opening mechanisms (hinged, sliding, magnetic and sealed), three panel combinations (all clear, mixed panels, opaque with window) and a bespoke interior (dividers, foam or velvet liners). The construction decides how contents are reached, displayed, organised and protected. Where two colours share one moulded part rather than separate panels, the two-colour guidance compares edge lamination with corner bonding.
Opening Mechanisms

Hinged lid
The lid is fixed with a piano hinge or an integrated acrylic hinge and opens fully for loading. It stays attached, so there is nothing to lose or misplace.
Best for: storage boxes, donation boxes, retail counter boxes

Sliding drawer
The front or side panel slides along a precision-grooved track. Closed, it keeps the box dust-tight; pull it out to load, push it back to seal.
Best for: gift packaging, under-shelf loading, display and access combinations

Magnetic lid
The lid lifts completely away from the base. Recessed magnets create a clean closure with no visible hardware — close it and the magnets hold it.
Best for: gift boxes, shoe boxes, flower boxes, premium packaging

Five-sided box (top entry)
Four walls and a base — no lid. Contents stay reachable from the top at all times. The simplest and most cost-effective box structure.
Best for: countertop storage, pen trays, plant stands, general containers
Lid Types & Box Construction
An acrylic display case — including the lidded boxes used for collectibles and retail — uses one of four lid mechanisms: magnetic, sliding, hinged and lift-off. This guide maps each closure option to the drawings and sample inserts you will actually need approved. Top panels are bonded either 90° standard or 45° mitred seamless, with edge profiles in square or rounded form. Every panel is polished.
Where the line falls. If the item sits under a lid, door or cover, it is a display case and this page is the right place to start. If staff or customers reach in every day — open-counter boxes, compartmented boxes, sample trays — that changes the design brief. Lidded acrylic boxes are fully customisable down to single-item sizes, and the same formats work for open bins: specify the lidded version as a comparison, and the choice of opening and closing method applies to both.
Lid mechanisms

Magnetic lid
Recessed magnets give a clean, seamless closure with no hardware. Protected when shut, effortless to open.
Best for: apparel packaging, jewellery, gift-box carry bags, retail packaging

Sliding lid
The lid runs along a concealed track, so it is easy to operate. Closed, it keeps dust out and the lid from being lost.
Best for: trays and folders, gift boxes, returnable packaging

Hinged lid
Fixed to the box with a piano hinge or nylon hinge; the whole lid opens back flat.
Best for: large display cases, gift boxes, retail display

Overlap lid
The lid is simply fitted over the front lip or side flange. A simple, economical design.
Best for: shoe display, gift packaging, mailer boxes, fundraising orders
Joint styles

90° standard joint
A simple straight edge bonded to the box — economical and tidy. Bond strength depends on the adhesive and how the bonding surfaces are prepared, and the joint sits perpendicular to the panels.
Best for: large display cases, gift boxes

45° mitred seamless joint
Adjacent faces are paired at 45° and bonded to the base edge, so the corner reads as one continuous mitre. Extra filler is applied into the corner and the joint is filled from the bond line outwards.
Best for: display presentation, gift boxes
Edge profiles

Square edge
A clean right-angle edge with a geometric look — straight lines suit high-volume, grid-aligned presentation.
Best for: apparel, jewellery, boxes, displays

Rounded edge (radius)
A radius replaces the right angle, breaking the corner so the finished piece is safer to handle and to protect in use.
Best for: jewellery, toys, children's products, touchscreens
The examples above are drawn from finished display cases across a range of sizes and formats. They are a starting point for discussion rather than a fixed specification — send us your drawings and we will confirm what is buildable.
Stackable design
Many display cases — especially risers and tiered boxes — need to stack or sit side by side. We have designed an interlocking edge system into the top and bottom faces: a laser-edged tongue fits a matching recess, so laser-edged units stack securely and can still be lifted apart.
Two-colour edge design Interlocking stack Magnetic closure options

Why Make Boxes From Acrylic?
Acrylic (PMMA) is the material of choice for custom boxes because it combines full clarity, durability and moisture resistance with unlimited shapes through laser cutting and CNC machining. Unlike cardboard, an acrylic box is permanent — the buyer keeps it and uses it again. Unlike wood or metal, acrylic is light and lets you see straight through to the contents.
| Acrylic (PMMA) | Cardboard | Wood | Metal | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clarity | 92% light transmission | Opaque | Opaque | Opaque |
| Durability | High — shatter resistant | Low — dents and tears | Medium — dents and scratches | High — dents |
| Weight | Lightweight | Very light | Heavy | Heavy |
| Moisture | Fully resistant | Absorbs — wicks and moulds | Absorbs — swells and warps | Rusts (steel) or corrodes |
| Custom shapes | Laser cut, CNC, thermoformed | Cut only | CNC and hand cut | Stamped and welded |
| Reusability | Permanent — the buyer keeps it | Single use | Long term | Long term |
| Branding | UV print, screen print, engraving, hot foil | Print only | Engrave, brand | Engrave, stamp |
| Cost (custom, low volume) | Moderate | Low | High | High |
| Best used for | Gifts, display, storage, retail packaging | Shipping, one-off packaging | Furniture, luxury goods | Industrial heavy duty |
Why Choose Acrylic for Your Box?
Acrylic (PMMA) is the preferred material for custom packaging boxes because it offers complete clarity together with durability and moisture resistance, and it can be formed into unlimited shapes by laser cutting and CNC machining. Unlike cardboard, an acrylic box is permanent — the buyer keeps it and uses it again. Unlike wood or metal, acrylic is light in weight and shows every item inside in full.
| Acrylic (PMMA) | Cardboard | Wood | Metal | |

Acrylic vs Polycarbonate vs PETG Boxes — How Each Material Fails
Three common clear plastic packaging materials are acrylic (PMMA), polycarbonate (PC) and PETG — and each has its own failure mode. Polycarbonate has the highest impact resistance, but it can still craze or crack under concentrated loads that leave it brittle. PETG is easy to process, yet it yellows over time, scratches easily and never reaches the optical clarity of polished acrylic, so a display box made in PETG looks hazy next to one in acrylic. Cast acrylic stays clear indoors for more than five years, takes a diamond-polished edge and is far less likely to chip at the edge under impact, with clean cuts straight off the tool. That is why it is the default material for gift boxes, display boxes and retail packaging. Polycarbonate and PETG earn their place only where a box must survive repeated knocks and edge clarity is secondary.
| Acrylic (PMMA) | Polycarbonate (PC) | PETG | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clarity | Optical — diamond-polished edges | Good, but a softer sheen | Lower — looks hazy next to acrylic |
| Scratch resistance | Good — hard surface | Poor — scratches easily | Poor — scratches easily |
| UV / yellowing | Stays clear indoors for 5+ years | Yellows over time | Yellows over time |
| Impact behaviour | Resists chipping at box corners | Highest impact resistance | Tough, but low stiffness |
| Volume cost | Cost-effective at scale | Higher | Moderate |
| Typical failure mode | Surface scratching when abused | Corner cracking plus scuffing | Yellowing plus hazing |
How Do You Choose the Right Wall Thickness for an Acrylic Box?
How do you choose the right wall thickness for an acrylic box?
Wall thickness depends on the box size, the weight of the contents and how the box will be handled. For small gift boxes and packaging under 200 mm, 3 mm acrylic is the standard — stable, clear and cost-effective in volume. For medium storage and shoe boxes (200–400 mm), 4–5 mm keeps panels rigid when stacked. For large display cases and frames over 400 mm, 5–8 mm prevents panel bowing. Heavier contents such as stone or metal, stacked items, or boxes shipped assembled need an extra layer of thickness. We confirm the correct specification at sample stage — send us your dimensions and we will size it properly.
Does it matter whether the box is cast or extruded acrylic?
Yes, for visible display boxes. Cast acrylic is diamond-polished to optical clarity and resists stress crazing at the bond line, which makes it ideal for gift boxes, display boxes and any product where the edge is part of the experience. Extruded acrylic is more economical and suits shrink packs, storage bins and utility applications where edge clarity is not worth paying for. We default to cast acrylic for display boxes and extruded acrylic for utility boxes, and we flag that trade-off in every quotation.
Can I customise the interior of my acrylic box?
Yes — a custom interior is one of the most common add-ons. Options include a removable acrylic divider grid sized to the number of compartments you need, die-cut EVA or PE foam shaped precisely to your product, velvet or suede liners in midnight navy, charcoal, black or a custom colour, and layered insert trays. Interiors matter most in gift boxes, where they protect the product at unboxing, in storage boxes, where they organise small items, and in display boxes, where they hold memorabilia in place. Send us the dimensions, weight and fragility of what goes inside and we will design the insert to match. Interior design is part of the sample process and carries no extra charge.

What Affects the Price of a Custom Acrylic Box?
Pricing for an acrylic box depends on six factors: size, thickness, quantity, opening method, internal structure and panel material. We do not publish fixed prices because every box is made to order — but here is exactly what drives cost, so you can plan a budget.
Box size & thickness
Larger boxes and thicker acrylic use more material. A 3 mm small gift box costs far less than a 10 mm large display case.
Order quantity
Unit cost falls sharply as quantity increases.
Opening mechanism
A sealed lid or a simple snap fit is the most economical. Hinged, sliding and magnetic lids add mechanical hardware, manufacturing complexity and assembly cost.
Internal configuration
An empty box is the standard option. Custom dividers, die-cut foam and velvet or suede liners add interior complexity and increase the cost per unit.
Panel composition
All-clear acrylic is priced as standard. Mixed-panel designs — including wood finishes and coloured plus clear — and opaque-with-window designs cost more because of the extra cutting and bonding.
Finish & branding
UV printing, laser engraving and custom foil add cost per unit. Diamond polishing is included as standard in every box.
What Affects the Price of an Acrylic Display Case?
Pricing for an acrylic display case depends on six factors: size, thickness, quantity, top structure, joint method and surface finish. We do not publish fixed prices because every case is made to order, but here is what drives cost so you can plan a budget.
Case size & thickness
Larger cases and thicker acrylic use more material. A 3 mm countertop card case costs far less than a 10 mm helmet-style enclosure.
Order quantity
Unit cost falls sharply as quantity increases.
Lid mechanism
A simple lift-off lid is the most economical. Magnetic closures, sliding rails and hinged mechanisms add cost through hardware and precision.
Joint style
A 90° standard joint is cost-effective. A 45° mitred seamless joint costs more because of precision cutting and bonding — but delivers a premium, invisible-corner finish.
Material & UV protection
Clear acrylic is the baseline. UV-filtering grades add material cost based on their tested performance. Coloured, frosted and mirrored acrylic also cost more.
Finish & branding
UV printing, laser engraving and custom foil stamping add unit cost. Buffed and diamond-polished edges are included as standard.
What Buyers Say About Our Acrylic Boxes
We custom ordered 300 top-opening, five-sided acrylic display boxes for our figurine collection. The sample was clean and crystal clear, the polishing was precise and the dimensions were exact. Quality stayed consistent across the bulk run, and repeat orders have been just as reliable.
We swapped the store's product cartons for these clear acrylic top-opening boxes. The magnetic lid opens smoothly and stays tight after weeks of daily use; after six months on the shelf there is no yellowing or warping, and they present far better than paperboard.
The top-opening five-sided acrylic box looks great and feels solid, the magnetic lid is a pleasure to use, repeat orders are consistent, delivery was on time and our customers are happy with it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you customise a box if I have no drawing — only an idea or a reference photo?
Yes. You do not need a 3D file or a professional CAD drawing — a dimensioned sketch or a reference photo is enough for a first quotation, and our engineers will turn it into a producible specification. If the design involves a close-fitting lid or a multi-part tray, supplying a CAD file noticeably improves accuracy and efficiency.
How much does a custom acrylic box cost?
There is no single catalogue price. Cost depends on the dimensions, the sheet grade and thickness, how many cut and polished faces there are, the bonding method or hardware used, the printed coverage, the packaging and the quantity.
What does the quotation include, and are there hidden charges?
A proper quotation is itemised: unit price at each quantity break, printing and branding costs, packaging level, sample fee and shipping — never one vague lump sum. For standard cutting, polishing, thermoforming and printing there is no tooling or fixture charge. Complex jigs, special forming moulds or a dedicated print plate may carry a one-off charge; it is listed separately in the quotation and only incurred once you approve it.
Does unit price fall with quantity, and can I be quoted several quantity breaks?
Yes. Unit price falls as quantity rises because machine setup and programming are spread across more units. You can ask for several quantity breaks in a single enquiry — for example 100 / 300 / 500 pieces — and we will price each one separately, so you can decide against your pilot and mass-production plans.
Can I order a sample before bulk production, and what does a sample cost?
Yes — sampling is the standard process for any new design. Sample lead time is typically 3–5 working days after the drawing is approved, shipped by courier with freight charged separately. The sample fee depends on size, material and decoration: a simple standard-size confirmation may be charged freight only, while a fully custom assembly is quoted as a paid sample. Whether the sample fee is credited against a later bulk order is confirmed in writing in the quotation.
How thick should the acrylic sheet be for my box?
Thickness depends on the weight of the product and the span of the box:
- Small jewellery compartments and light storage — 1.5–2 mm is enough
- Desktop document trays and moderate loads — 3–4 mm
- Heavy storage and large display boxes — 5 mm or more, so the structure stays rigid
Is the material environmentally friendly and safe?
It is recyclable and free of odour. Some designs can be made in food-grade acrylic, safe for food packaging, cosmetics storage and everyday home use.
Do you support OEM / ODM?
Yes. We support both OEM and ODM: bespoke box formats, structures, outer packaging and labels developed around your brand positioning.
