Why Use Acrylic for Display Cabinets?

Acrylic (PMMA) is a practical display-cabinet material because it combines glass-like clarity with lower weight and better shatter resistance. Unlike glass, it can be laser-cut and CNC-machined to custom sizes with precision-polished edges. For light-sensitive contents we can specify a UV-filtering grade and supply its performance data sheet with your quotation.

  Acrylic Glass Polycarbonate Wood
Clarity 92% light transmission 90% 88% (yellows over time) Opaque
Weight ~50% lighter than glass Heavy Similar to acrylic Heavier
Impact resistance 17× stronger than glass Breaks easily 250× stronger Durable
UV protection Available (92%+ blocking) Limited options Yellows under UV No data
Custom shapes Laser cutting, CNC machining, thermoforming Limited Limited CNC only
Edge clarity Buffed + diamond-polished, crystal clear Hidden in the frame Cannot match Not applicable
Scratch resistance Moderate (can be coated) High Low (scratches easily) High
Cost (custom) Low to moderate High Moderate Moderate
Best used for Display cabinets, retail, collectibles Museum vitrines Safety guards Furniture

Cast Acrylic vs Extruded Acrylic

Cast and extruded acrylic are both PMMA, but they are produced differently — and that difference directly affects the quality and working life of an acrylic display cabinet.

Cast acrylic is poured into moulds and cured slowly. It offers outstanding light transmission and stronger resistance to chemical attack, and once the edges are diamond-polished it takes on a glass-like transparency — which is why it is the first choice for premium display cabinets.

Extruded acrylic is formed by high-temperature extrusion. Production is faster and cheaper and sheet thickness is more consistent, but edge polishing is more limited and the sheet is more prone to cracking under chemical or stress loading. It suits budget-friendly, standard display products.

For a display cabinet, the right choice depends on what the cabinet needs to do:

  Cast acrylic Extruded acrylic
Edge polish quality Diamond-polished to optical transparency — the premium display standard Acceptable polish, but cannot reach glass-like clarity
Thickness tolerance ±10–15% (wider tolerance inherent to casting) ±5% (tighter — inherent to extrusion)
UV filtering options Available as UV-stable cast grades (90–98% UV blocking) UV-stable extruded grades exist but are rarely used in display work
Chemical / stress resistance Higher resistance to crazing under solvent and bonding stress More prone to stress cracking at bonded joints under load
Cost per sheet Higher — slower manufacturing process Lower — faster production, more uniform output
Best for display cabinets Collector showcases, jewellery vitrines and museum installations High-volume retail POP displays, protective guards and applications where edge polish is not critical

What Affects the Price of a Custom Acrylic Cabinet?

Pricing for an acrylic display cabinet depends on six factors: size, thickness, quantity, lid construction, joint method and surface finish. We do not publish fixed prices because every cabinet is made to order — but here is exactly what drives the cost, so you can plan a budget.

Case size & thickness

Larger cases and thicker acrylic use more material. A 3 mm tabletop card case costs far less than a 10 mm helmet-style enclosure.

Order quantity

Unit cost falls sharply as quantity increases.

Lid mechanism

A simple lift-off lid is the most economical. Magnetic closures, sliding rails and hinged mechanisms add cost through hardware and precision.

Joint style

A 90° standard joint is cost-effective. A 45° mitred seamless joint costs more because of precision cutting and bonding — but delivers a premium, invisible-corner finish.

Material & UV protection

Clear acrylic is the baseline. UV-filtering grades add material cost based on their tested performance. Coloured, frosted and mirrored acrylic also cost more.

Finish & branding

UV printing, laser engraving and custom foil stamping add unit cost. Buffed + diamond-polished edges are included as standard.

Precision clarity

We select high-grade acrylic sheet and give every cabinet a fine surface polish and seamless joints, so it stays optically clear with no hazing or marks. One-piece moulded construction is solid and stable under load, combining display quality with durability.

Every process under one roof

Cutting, grinding, polishing, UV printing and heat bending are all handled in-house. We do not outsource, so process standards stay consistent, every detail is controlled and quality is traceable.

Fast sampling, reliable volume production

Paid samples ship in 3–5 days. Bulk orders run on a 15–20 day lead time. Our 4,000 m² factory in Guangzhou handles first orders from 100 pieces up to 50,000-piece runs — one factory, one quality standard, one production team.

What Buyers Say About Our Display Cases

“

“The custom acrylic cabinet completely exceeded expectations.” The dimensions were spot on, and the acrylic is so clear it looks like glass — yet far lighter. The edges are smooth enough that they do not catch your hand, the magnetic doors glide shut and it keeps dust out well. Patient communication and very solid packaging; nothing arrived damaged. It looks like a premium display cabinet in the studio. Highly recommended.

— Interior Designer, United States
“

“Precise workmanship and genuinely solid quality.” I am particular about build quality, and this cabinet satisfied me. The sheet is thick, the cuts are accurate, the holes line up and the edges are nicely rounded. The custom size matched the space I had reserved exactly, and models, reference books and equipment all sit securely. High transparency without affecting the display. Excellent shock-proof packaging and thoroughly professional overall.

— Mechanical Engineer, Germany
“

“Beautiful for jewellery — the transparency really shows pieces off.” Longyi made an acrylic cabinet for me to display jewellery and design samples. The work is clean, the edge polish is beautiful, and the clarity makes each piece stand out. The magnetic door is comfortable to use and the unit is light but stable. Communication on the custom service was smooth and the size was made exactly to my requirements. Thoughtful packaging, no scratches. Worth recommending.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much weight can a custom acrylic display cabinet hold?

Load capacity depends mainly on the sheet thickness and the unsupported span. For short spans, 5 mm is enough for blind boxes and small figurines, while 8–10 mm suits heavier collectibles. For long spans or heavier pieces we recommend a thicker sheet or additional supports. Acrylic cabinets are not intended for concentrating very heavy, bulky items on a single shelf.

Is an acrylic display cabinet waterproof? Can it be used in a bathroom or on a balcony?

Acrylic itself is moisture- and water-resistant, so it performs well in damp environments. It is not heat-resistant, however: keep it away from water heaters, radiators and direct sunlight, because high temperatures will deform the sheet.

Are the edges sharp? Can they cut your hand?

Finished products are diamond-polished, so edges and corners are smooth to the touch. If you would like rounded corners, simply add a note to your order — we recommend it for homes with children.

What temperature can acrylic display cabinets withstand?

We recommend an ambient temperature below 60 °C. Keep the cabinet away from ovens, space heaters and prolonged direct sunlight — high temperatures will cause the sheet to bow and distort.

What can be customised on an acrylic display cabinet?

You can specify length, width, height and sheet thickness; clear, frosted, black or white solid sheet; magnetic doors, flip lids, hinged doors, locks, drawers, mirrored back panels, cut-outs and UV-printed logos. Rounded corners and glue-free slot-together construction are also available. Send your dimensions plus a sketch or image and we will quote from there.

Does acrylic scratch easily, and can scratches be repaired?

Acrylic is softer than glass, so hard objects will leave scratches. Clean it only with a soft cloth — never use steel wool or abrasive cleaners. Fine surface scratches can be polished out; deep scratches cannot be repaired.
